Saltstone Caring
We are a registered charity covering Kingsbridge, Salcombe and surrounding area. Saltstone Caring came into being following a need which was clearly identified, through a Government survey, to enhance the quality of life for older and vulnerable people. Companionship and more effective support networks were identified as the highest priorities through direct consultation with these target groups.
In a social context, rural isolation is a problem in this area. A third of parishes are without a daily bus service; 16% of households do not own a car; 32% of all residents are over retirement age, and nearly 20% of all households are occupied by a lone pensioner.
Saltstone Caring formed to address some of the issues identified by promoting the independence, physical and mental well-being of older, isolated or vulnerable people living within Kingsbridge, Salcombe and the surrounding area, through the provision of services not normally available through the statutory agencies.
Our services are delivered by a growing team of volunteers, keen to provide friendship and support to those who need it. Our volunteers have the opportunity of using their life skills and experiences, and finding fulfilment in making a difference. Examples of support include
- companionship
- shopping
- transport to non medical appointments
- trips out for a cup of tea and change of scene
- accompanied transport to social activities
- carer relief
- signposting to other helpful organisations
The benefits of this service include confidence-building, improved sense of well-being and reduced feelings of isolation.
Where Saltstone Caring are unable to help, we will always seek to signpost to other organisations that can provide the support required.
Our volunteers receive initial and on-going training and therefore improve their own skills and knowledge over time.
Saltstone Caring has a management committee of volunteer trustees, and is supervised on a day-to-day basis by a Project Co-ordinator.
Our office is open from 9.30 am-1.00 pm Monday to Friday. There is an answerphone if staff are unavailable to take your call. Your call is important to us and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
