Saltstone Caring came into being following a need which was clearly identified, through a Government survey, to enhance the quality of life for older and vulnerable people.
Companionship and more effective support networks were identified as the highest priorities through direct consultation with these target groups.
In a social context, rural isolation is a problem in this area.
A third of parishes are without a daily bus service; 16% of households do not own a car; 32% of all residents are over retirement age, and nearly 20% of all households are occupied by a lone pensioner.
Our aim is to promote the independence, physical and mental well-being of older, isolated or vulnerable people living within Kingsbridge, Salcombe and the surrounding area, through the provision of services not normally available through statutory agencies.
Saltstone Caring became a fully operational charity in February 2009.
